Gameplay in the Saints Row games focuses on an open world where the player can complete missions to progress an overall story, as well as engage in various side activities. The series follows the 3rd Street Saints, a fictional street gang originally operating out of the Saints Row district, hence the series' title. Instead of including him as an option with a generic title like "Male 4," the development team wanted to specifically call out Nolan North because he has voiced many iconic video game characters.Saints Row is a series of action-adventure video games created by Volition and published by THQ and Deep Silver. "For those not aware, Nolan North is the voice actor who brings to life a number of the biggest characters in video games."
"In Saints Row: The Third we provided an oddball option of a nonsensical zombie voice, but we wanted something even more unique for Saints Row IV, so we included an option for 'Nolan North,'" Phillips explains.
In Saints Row IV, the player will be able to select from one of seven available voices to give their character a unique personality. "In the process of brainstorming for that new marquee weapon, one of our guys said the words 'dubstep gun' and we all immediately knew it was a weapon that we HAD to bring to reality," says Phillips. "Early on the project I told the designers that although we had a lot of very cool weapons we didn't yet have anything as iconic as we had for Saints Row: The Third." "The huge popularity of the dubstep gun - a weapon that kills with the power of dub music in Saints Row IV - was by design, not an accident," explains Phillips. Sadly, we ran out of time," recalls Phillips. "The concept was prototyped during an 'Awesome Week' experiment where the team got to work on whatever they wanted to that they felt would make the game better.
One of the few things the team began developing but didn't finish in time, however, was a flyable dragon. This includes, by the way, a weapon that kills using the power of dub music, visiting characters' nightmares, and a 300-foot-tall self-aware soda can ("Saints Flow"). "With of the concept of the player being put into a simulation - a la The Matrix - and assuming the role of the president of the United States with super powers and turrets on the front lawn, we could justify just about anything." "There is very little content that we can't include in Saints Row IV because of the over-the-top nature of the game," begins Phillips.
